Are you a donut?

I once read an article about the way we journal. It may of been in the Scrapbook Inspirations Magazine, I apologise to who ever wrote it that I cannot thank you but it had some useful metaphors in the article that struck a cord with me, I hope you don't mind me repeating some of them.

The piece likened our journalling to a donut. When you journal do you just include the barest minimum, say the date and a name.......this would be the sugar coating!!! With this type of journalling you know very little of the artist or what the LO is about. The second type of journalling was the 'donut' itself. This may include one or two facts but no real feeling, thoughts or expressions. This type of journalling could be ' Robert during a long, hard, rocky walk from Hrebienok to Skalnata Plesco, Slovakia August 08'. Better, but there is no story or emotion. The third type of journalling is the 'jam', it's the core of the story, it may express your feelings or others around you or maybe a story you wish to tell.

My type of journalling.....is sometimes the 'donut' but I prefer and aim for the 'jam'. To me scrapbooking should preserve special moments, everyday events, photos and an outlet for my creativity.

So, I have posted some old LO's, which type of journalling have I used for each one? (click on the picture for a better view). What's your style of journalling and what do you aim to strive for?. Are you the 'sugar' the 'donut' or the 'jam'?

  2. Firstly ... fabulous layouts, I must say. And then next, to be honest I think I'm more sugar. I tend to put the basics down rather than write too much. Mind you, saying that, it depends on what the actual layout is? Thank you for this entry in your blog, it's made me really think .... and made me hungry LOL

  4. Great post! I think when I started scrapbooking I kept my journalling short, but as I've grown in confidence I've started writing a lot more. Now I really believe that the best layouts have a story and I'm finding that I'm using blog posts as the basis for lo's because the journalling is sitting there waiting for me.

  5. Journalling is something I certainly need to work on. Thanks for this, it has really helped me think about what I want or need to write and also who I am writing for. I'm definately a 'sugar coating' at the moment but am working towards the 'donut' and 'jam'.

  6. I agree with you Sian, your blog is full of wonderfull even wonderfull stories. It would be a shame not to have them on a layout for your future generations to ponder.

  8. I'm a sugar-coating kinda gal... but sometimes I do like a bit of jam too - and of course the donut itself is quite important too. I do like it when the whole LO is like the jam - when the picture tells the whole story.
Actually I cheat... if there's no explanation on the LO, I always have a little handwritten note on the back, telling the "Jam" :)
    Beautiful LO's too :)

  11. Great Blog! Love the LO's too. I am probably a doughnut journaller. I tend to add the more personal journalling to the back of my LO's though so only I know its there! I do this only if the journalling is really personal and I dont want it on view in my album.

  13. I remember that article it was indeed Scrapbook Inspirations. I am very guilty of sugar coating with occasional donut. I would love to achieve jam but it always comes away as cheesy when I do it.

Blimey writing that was like one of those Randoms adverts my purple teacup! ;)
